Summary This report, containing an extensive review of the literature regarding older women who are victims of domestic violence, found there was little agreement regarding definitions, theoretical understandings or appropriate responses. The emerging field of elder abuse and ensuing debates regarding where older victims of domestic violence fit is discussed. The project also undertook a secondary analysis of available data to try and establish incidence rates but there were difficulties in obtaining reliable data including collection difficulties, low rates of disclosure and low rates of detection, which were discussed. The importance of establishing proper reporting mechanisms, including agreed definitions, in the fields of aged care, elder abuse and domestic violence is emphasised, if the community is to succeed in responding to the issue of older women who are victims of domestic violence
