Summary This article discusses the changes to criminal injuries compensation in Victoria that were introduced on 1 July 1997. At this time Victoria became the only Australian jurisdiction to deny victims of crime an award of compensation for pain and suffering experienced as a result of the act of violence. The author considers the justification for this change that was presented by the Victorian Attorney-General and briefly sets out some of the key features of the new scheme. The significance of the changes is discussed including the effect on certain categories of victims, such as victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
