Summary In this article the authors outline a model of practice for working with women and children where there are domestic violence and child protection concerns. A framework was developed by the St George Domestic Violence Counselling Service and the St George Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service in Sydney, Australia. Features of the service agreement between the two agencies include ensuring that domestic violence is named and the effects of domestic violence on children are clearly communicated. Another key component of the framework is developing a safety plan to address the issues. A case study of a child with 'oppositional behaviour' and who is living in a domestic violence situation is presented to demonstrate the framework.
