Summary The paper provides a comparison of academic literature and media reports of male victimisation within intimate partner relationships. Taking a qualitative approach the paper analyses existing academic research along with 38 media reports in order to discuss issues and themes that are common as well as conflicting and provides an overview of the patterns and trends that relate to intimate partner violence and male victimisation. Although reoccurring themes are derived from both sources of information each are seen to have their own enabling and limiting qualities, with current information being predominately published by media articles. The research concludes that the media-academic alliance is a promising provision for information for future research prospects.
