Summary This article reviews the amendments to the Mental Health Act(Qld) that commenced in 2008 and the effect these amendments have had on victims' rights. A more systematic and proactive approach to identifying and supporting victims and offering early information to victims of mentally ill offenders was recommended in the review of the Mental Health Act (Qld). A key recommendation was that an information register be established. The Victim Support Coordinator service that assisted victims of mentally ill offenders was expanded to become a state-wide service. The author suggests that the innovative provisions in the legislation better recognise the rights of victims and enhance public confidence about safety and accountability with mentally ill offenders.
