Summary Many primary prevention services that address sexually violent behaviour are seen to be ineffective. The article states that this is due to the programs being designed without an extensive evidence base. The article summarises and reviews 191 published articles that are associated with sexually violent perpetration and examines the risk and protective factors. The study produced 67 risk and protective factors that were common amongst the articles, and after categorising them into 16 different domains, the articles goes in depth to discuss each one. From this analysis the article identifies the need for a multidisciplinary approach for primary prevention programs due to the complex and diverse range of risk and protective factors that are present. The article provides a basis for prevention strategies to be developed that are evidence informed and that capture a wide range of factors of sexually violent behaviour at each level of the social ecology.
