Summary In this study the authors present the results of a training needs assessment of 243 victim service providers in Virginia, USA. The goal of the study was to plan foundational training for victim service providers with three years or less experience. In the online survey a range of training needs topics were covered, including victims' rights, crisis intervention, active listening, and victim impact statements. A focus of the study was the extent to which reported training needs were related to the level of formal education, experience and role of the support worker in the organisation. The results suggested that service providers with less experience and less formal education may have more significant training needs than their more educated and experienced colleagues.
