Summary This article examines the characteristics of female suicide with an aim of determining how it is associated or caused by experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV). The effects of IPV are discussed and in particular the identification of IPV as a strong risk factor for mental health disorders such as anxiety and mood disorders including PTSD, depression and suicidality. Data and research regarding suicide and suicide ideation among IPV victims is further analysed. The author concludes that the experience of IPV is an important contributing factor for suicidal ideation and behaviour among female victims. The author suggests that the focus should not only be on the victim but on the knowledge about IPV and its effects, and recommends appropriate educational programs be developed for professionals.
