Summary In this study a survey was distributed to a diverse group of transgender people in Virginia, USA, asking questions related to physical violence, sexual violence, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, and alcohol and illicit substance use. The results showed a clear relationship between violence and mental health in the sample group surveyed and both transgender men and transgender women were shown to be at high risk for physical and sexual violence as well as suicide ideation and attempted suicide. Another finding was that there was a significant relationship between sexual violence and illicit substance use in transgender women. The authors suggest that there is an opportunity for psychologists to take the lead in developing and implementing evidence-basted treatments that have been designed specifically for transgender victims of crime.
